In 1991 the first edition of the CSS Code was adopted by the IMO Assembly. This edition already addressed the three categories of “standardised stowage and securing systems “semi-standardised stowage and securing” and “non-standardised stowage and securing”. The prime example of “standardised stowage and securing systems” are containers carried on containerships, where pre-calculated and well documented schemes of stowage and securing should be faithfully adhered to for avoiding damages and losses. Of course, there is an approved “Cargo Securing Manual” on each dry cargo vessel. This mandatory manual, also established by IMO to support the application of the CSS Code, contains advice specific to the particular vessel, but it needs well founded understanding from its users. It is the purpose of this loss prevention bulletin to stimulate and promote this understanding.
