Description: This work is a sequel to the book Operational Warfare at Sea: Theory and
Practice, published by Routledge in 2009. It explains and analyzes in a
much greater detail sea control in all its complexities. It also describes the
main methods of obtaining and maintaining sea control. The subject of sea
control is often discussed, but the true meaning of the term “sea control” or
“control of the sea” is all too often either misunderstood or not understood
at all. For example, many naval officers firmly believe that just by having a
naval presence in a certain sea/ocean area one also possesses sea control.
Many also confuse power projection and sea control or sea denial as one
side of the same coin. The need for a work that explains and analyzes in
some detail all aspects of sea control seems obvious. In a war between two
strong opponents, the principal objective of each side would be to obtain
and maintain sea control or control of the sea. Among other things, a side
that fails to achieve that objective would have great difficulties in defending
and protecting its military-economic potential at sea and in supporting
friendly troops on land. In such a case, the weaker side has to shift to a
strategic defensive and conduct sea denial. Perhaps it is needless to say that
no country possesses sea control in peacetime. Struggle for sea control
starts with the first encounter of the opposing forces in combat. It consists
of the related and mutually dependent phases of obtaining and maintaining
sea control.
