Description: Climate change is one of the most challenging environmental issues. International agreements related to climate change will require that nations consider mitigation actions aiming at domestic land-based emissions sources, and inevitably this will affect the transport sector. Transport is the second biggest greenhouse gas emitting sector, after energy, and is responsible for around a quarter of EU greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping industry is the most energy-efficient sector in transportation, but, together with air transport experiences the fastest growth in terms of emissions.
This book focuses on the social and economic impacts of in-port ships’ emissions and relevant energy demand, providing an insight of the expected barriers for implementation, and formulating recommendations on policy actions that could accelerate the implementation of relevant mitigation measures.
Chapter 1 introduces the shipping industry, and the induced air pollution. In Chapter 2, the current environmental policies, focusing on the mitigation of maritime emissions, are analyzed. In Chapter 3, the methodology for the accurate estimation of shipping emissions is discussed, as well as some relevant studies on this field. The significant issue of externalities in ports is included in Chapter 4. In the last section, Chapter 5, the available abatement measures for the unwanted environmental impacts of ships at berth are listed.
