Description: The 2018 edition of Lloyd’s List’s One Hundred Container Ports shows that the industry’s elite port facilities handled a combined 588m teu in 2017, representing healthy 6% volume growth on the previous year.
Chinese dominance was cemented as its resurgent economy drove cargo numbers through its major ports, including Shanghai, holding onto its number one crown for a thirteenth consecutive year.
A strong showing from emerging markets in south and southeast Asia, North America and South America helped support China’s throughput gains, whilst offsetting fairly mixed results elsewhere.
But the overall take for 2017 was one of prosperity for the container port sector despite the risks and challenges that remain.
