Ropes are made of a great variety of materials. Today the common ropes and cords in use are made of hemp, which is reasonably smooth to handle and quite strong. Cheaper rope is made of sisal. This is rough and whiskery. Much rough string is made of sisal. Cotton makes a smooth rope which is white when new, and easy on the hands, but it is not as strong as hemp. Several synthetic fibers are made into rope. These are manufactured plastics, and the best known are nylon and dacron.
